Getting Started

The Evaluation Process

One of our Chicago-based Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) will come to your home, and/or your child’s school, to do a comprehensive developmental evaluation. The evaluation process always starts with a meeting with you, the parents, where we learn all about your child’s history, your concerns,  and your goals for your child.  We use evidence based assessments such as the VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R, AFLS, EFLS, and PEAK. The BCBA then creates an individualized treatment plan that targets your child’s skill deficits in each developmental domain. The evaluation and treatment plan process used by Steinberg Behavior Solutions, Inc. is based on years of research proving the effectiveness of ABA therapy programs for children with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

As our clients age, we have assessment tools that follow them through the life span.  Some assessments that are used to identify age-appropriate goals and needs look at domains such as:

  • Home Skills
  • Basic Living Skills
  • Community Participation Skills
  • School Skills
  • Vocational Skills
  • Independent Living Skills

These domains identify a number of isolated skills relevant to the adolescent, young adult, and adult population.  Keeping one step ahead and addressing these age-appropriate goals allows our clients to gain and maintain their independence in the home and out in the community.

ABA Therapy in Chicago

How We Teach

In teaching your child, we first just play.  Our therapist becomes someone that your child wants to play with.  All children developmentally learn about the world around them through play.  Once we have identified the goal to be learned, we start by finding the step that your child is able to do within that goal (baseline).  We then systematically break the skill down, step by step, and teach each sub-component part until it is mastered.  When a step is mastered, we introduce the next step in the sequence towards the goal of learning the entire skill.

“One step at a time, we will teach your child how”

Generalization and Maintenance

Generalization across stimuli, people, and settings is systematically programmed into the treatment session.  Once a specific skill is taught, we ensure that your child knows that skill in every situation.

Use it or lose it – Once a skill is learned, we maintain each and every skill by using and reviewing them daily.

Program Supervision Meetings

Your BCBA will come supervise the ABA therapists providing the direct therapy to your child.  Our BCBAs come to each family weekly to monitor your child’s progress.  When a goal is mastered, your BCBA will add a new goal to your child’s treatment plan.  These supervision meetings are a great way for you to stay abreast of your child’s progress and discuss any new behavioral challenges or goals that you would like your ABA therapy team to address.

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend these supervision meetings. At these supervision meetings, parents will receive an update on their child’s progress in each of the individual ABA therapy goal areas, and practical ways to generalize the skills that have been learned to the natural environment outside of the treatment sessions.

Behavioral concerns will also be addressed at the supervision meeting and modifications to the behavior plan will be implemented. To ensure consistency for your child, it is critical that the parent and other caregivers understand the behavior plan in place. These are the tools that parents need to help their child through challenging situations. In addition, it is critical that all adults respond to the child’s behavior, both appropriate and inappropriate, in a consistent way. This will ensure steady progress across all settings, and avoid an increase in the inappropriate behavior in some settings with some people.
